After pricing out stock cabinets and timing a few sales, I picked up a pantry and two more upper cabinets for my new desk area. Handy Man installed them in nothing flat.
Of course I had to play assistant.
Eventually, I plan to replace the door fronts of the upper cabinets with glass to display my nice glasses.
A little crown molding and they were ready to be painted like the rest of the cabinets.
Then came "out with the old." Out with the old, odd-shaped kitchen island. I wanted a simple, long, rectangle shaped island where I would comfortably be able to get four bar stools on the other side.
So we Handy Man started the demolition process.
Mr Blue Eyes was having a hard time letting go of the island for some reason... not exactly sure why?!?!
Isn't he cute??
And in dire need of a haircut.
Once the cabinet skin was removed, we found a slight problem.
There was a gigantic saw cut and hole in the hardwood floors around one side of the cabinet bases.
We came to a fork in the road. Handy Man and I both wanted to hold off refinishing our honey oak hardwood floors for a while. Our kids are horrible creatures to hardwood floors. We agreed that Handy Man's head would rotate and explode the first time one of them drug a chair or toy across a newly refinished floors.
Handy Man was optimistic that the new island bases would cover up the saw lines. I sure hoped so. He continued the demolition process.
We brought the new base cabinets in. We tried like four different layouts and they either didn't work with the kitchen's master layout, or they didn't cover the damaged floor areas.
Ohhh mama. You just never know what the last homeowner is going to leave you.
It was looking like we had to make a choice. Proceed with the planned island remodel and add the floors to our project list or reinstall and put granite on the old, weird island. I was not interested in plan B.
Forward Handy Man, forward!
Ultimately, my envisioned island was a flop. We settled on a large, square island. Simple, clean lines, and classic. It's shape added so much more space and functionality to our kitchen. I was getting super excited.
Thank goodness we had some of the pantry cardboard left. Behold our make-shift, high class counter-top we sported for over a month!
Granite was now on hold. We had to re-finish the floors now before we could install the island and the desk end cap. Handy Man was getting edgy. Our kitchen remodel was taking a lot longer than we anticipated.
But isn't that par for the course in DIY?
