On our way back from the lakes, we were driving down a two lane paved road when Grandpop spotted a little turtle crossing the road - while in Iowa, we caught night-crawlers, fish and frogs. We needed to add painted turtle to our list. Grandpop turned around and went back for the turtle.
I just happened to have a little bucket in the back of the truck. He grabbed him off the road and we decided to take him home so the kids could get a look at a turtle up close.
I am sure this little guys didn't wake up this morning and expect to be swept up off the road, plopped into a slippery bucket and stuck in a moving vehicle. He was not exactly excited and tried desperately to escape the hole way home.
My Brown Eyed Girl thought the scratching noise he made while scratching to get out was funny.
When we got home we let him go in the grass. We had to make sure to tell our Brown Eyed Girl not to put her fingers near his face because he might bite.
She was so excited she could hardly hold still. She was giggling and laughing out loud.
She kept jumping up and down.
Mr Blue Eyes on the other hand was a little intimidated by the little turtle. Calves, lambs, pigs, no problem. Turtles - someone better be holding him.
And then JC came to check out the turtle.
JC started smelling the turtle.
The turtle hissed at JC.
JC tried to paw/squash the turtle.
JC got yelled at.
Our Brown Eyed Girl named him Stripe.
We admired the shades of red and yellow decorating his shell and body.
He hissed at us.
Brown Eyed Girl hissed back at him.
We rubbed his belly.
And then we placed him gently in the grass and said, "Farewell Stripe."
