"God forbid that I should go to any heaven in which there are no horses."
~R.B. Cunningham Graham
I have been horse crazy nearly all of my life. I have had horses in my back yard for all of my adult life. For the last two months while we waited to close on our new house, we lived in town. Our situation was better than an apartment or an extended stay hotel by all means. I have learned though that having room to roam and horses just beyond my back porch is something that I will always have as long as I am able.
For those of you that have horses, no explanation is needed. For those that don't... no explanation will ever be sufficient. Second to my children, horses lite a special place in my soul that nothing else can compare.
Yesterday, the sun was shining, the weather was warm (52' was a heat wave compared to the last few days) and the barn was calling my name.
My Brown Eyed Girl was napping. I decided to take Mr Blue Eyes out to pet the horses and breath in some fresh air. He was more than willing after being cooped up for the last few days unable to run and play outside.
It was really the first time Mr Blue Eyes had been able to even explore outside since we moved.
This little dude was ecstatic to be turned loose.
First, we had to check out every nook and cranny in the new barn.
Then we went into the paddock and the horses were waiting to greet us.
Without an ounce of fear, Mr Blue Eyes reached for each horse that approached. Gently touching their soft noses. A smile ran ear to ear.
I sat against the wall of the barn, Mr Blue Eyes leaning against me and we just sat there - watching. Watching the horses meander around. Sniff the dirt. Bath in the sun.
It warmed my soul how at ease Mr Blue Eyes was with the horses walking beside him. 500 times his size and yet he was calm and relaxed. Well, until Skip tried to lick his face. Then he promptly extended his hand and shouted "Top!" (which means stop)
And then...
He reached right up and pet Skip again.

Home is where your family is.
I have the best family!
My heart was content. The wind was calm and the sun was shining. This was a good day. A great day. We sat for a while just watching.
I was pleased to see the horses have gotten used to the high life of automatic watering systems.
Mr Blue Eyes searched for rocks to stick in his pockets - So it begins. Checking every load of laundry for pocket treasures.
After a while, we went back inside to wait for Sissy to wake up. Today was just too precious not to share with my Brown Eyed Girl.
She was more than excited to get to go see the horses. We all tracked back outside to the paddock.
I can't believe how big these kids are getting...
They both helped me feed the horses for the evening.
While the horses ate, we took a little walk through the paddock. My Brown Eyed Girl educated Mr Blue Eyes about horse poop. She steered him around each pile giggling and screeching "Yucky! Poop!" Soon Mr Blue Eyed was screeching and pointing at every pile he saw. I laughed at them and just for fun stepped on an apple just to watch my Brown Eyed Girl's reaction.
She squirmed. I was informed I was NOT allowed to wear my shoes in the house anymore.
Half way across the pasture we all held hands. We talked about how beautiful the day was and how nice our new house was.
I felt the temperature begin to drop so we turned and headed back to the barn to close everything up for the day.
As the kids raced to the porch making foot prints in the little snow still left on the ground, I smiled. This was my best day so far of the new year.
I am so blessed to be able to give my children all of this.
