He is ONE...
I can't believe that my little boy, my Mr Blue Eyes, is ONE!
Where has the time gone?
I can't believe that a year ago I was laying in a hospital room,
holding a tiny little newborn. Dreaming of all of the possibilities a son
would bring to my life. A son. The words seemed so foreign to me a year ago. A
boy... when all I knew was girl.
He was beautiful, he took my breath away!
In a split second, our tiny little family had changed.
... and then there were four.
A son!
Last Sunday, we had a little birthday party for Mr Blue Eyes. It was a beautiful day out on the prairie. A perfect day for family to come over, enjoy the sunshine, catch bugs, and eat cake!
I bought Mr Blue Eyes his own little cake (okay large cupcake) to devourer. His first cake experience. All that bright, sugary goodness on top of a moist delicious baked treat.
Cameras in hand, we waited for him to take that first cautious taste. Savoring the sweet texture before digging in with both hands and consuming as much cake as possible.
We sang.
He tasted.
We waited.
We took the wrapper off the cup cake.
We encouraged.
We forced another taste.
...and another.
Sissy grew impatient, stealing finger-fulls of frosting.
Compared to our Brown Eyed Girls first cake experience, it was a little lack luster. She tore into her cake. There were only crumbs left by the time she was done. It was amazing and I'll admit she set some pretty high standards for Mr Blue Eyes.
After a while we realized, the kid was not a fan of frosting. Nor a fan of ice cream. If I didn't have the incision, I'd swear he wasn't mine.
But he sure is cute!
He didn't need cake to have fun. He was his usual happy self.
My BIG Birthday Boy!
When our Brown Eyed girl turned one, I took her to the Denver Zoo for her birthday. In keeping
Sure they didn't have all of the animals that the Denver Zoo has. But what they lacked in numbers, they more than made up for in environment, feel and experience. We still saw hippos, lions and tigers - Oh My!
The kids climbed on all of these cute little animal statues.
Sibling love!
But the best thing that the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo had to offer were the giraffes!!!
The giraffe enclosures allowed the animals to get up close and personal. Close enough you could touch them. The zoo even allowed you to feed the giraffes. It was magical!
$2 for three little pieces of lettuce to feed the giraffes.
It was worth every penny!
She was a happy girl. The highlight of her day.
What amazed me the most was how Mr Blue Eyes took to the giraffes. At home, he is interested in the horses; however, if you take him up close to one he gets a little nervous. He isn't really keen on petting the horses. He is content to just look at them and study them from afar.
The giraffes were different. He was infatuated with them. Border line obsessed.
Without hesitation, he would reach towards them vying to touch one.
I set him on the ground and he held himself up by holding on to the railing.
A couple of younger giraffes, who stood eye level with the kids from our balcony, were more inquisitive and patient. Before I knew it, the kids were petting and scratching the young giraffes on their necks.
Watching the older girls, Mr Blue Eyes just jumped right in and started reaching through the posts. Reaching as far as he could to try and touch one.
Before long, one of the young giraffes cozy-ed right up to where he was and allowed the birthday boy to pet her.
Not even her blue tongue phased this future zoologist.
I tried to get a memorable brother & sister photo in front of the giraffes.
It was a bit of a no-go.
Giraffes - our new favorite animal.
The kids slept all the way home. They were tuckered out. We just had one more thing to do to round out our perfect day.
SWING!!!
Days like this, I wish I didn't have to work. I wish every day we could take little adventures and discover new things together. Cross off items on our bucket lists - feeding and petting a giraffe was definitely on my list. I wish I had all the time and resources at the tips of my fingers to share these moments with my kids.
Darn work!
I sat last night as our day was winding down and just really felt so blessed.
Blessed to have two beautiful kids.
Blessed that in the evenings I am privileged enough to
be able to rock my daughter in my left arm and my son in my right.
Happy First Birthday Mr Blue Eyes!
